Government has announced the reversal of Kotoka International Airport to its original name: Accra International Airport. Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga weeks ago announced a bill was in the offing for the renaming. However Accra News has gathered naming or renaming of monuments like the Airport does not require a legislation.
Kumasi Airport was renamed Prempeh II International Airport without recourse to Parliament. The decision to return the Kotoka International Airport to its original name when announced week was greeted with mixed reactions. Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe explained the decision to return to the original name is to market Ghana’s capital city; Accra to the world.
Again, other proponents argue Ghana cannot be glorifying a coup maker by naming its first International Airport after him. Major General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka was a leading member of the National Liberation Council, NLC which overthrew Ghana’s first democratically elected President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on 24th February 1966.
He was however killed when a company of the reconnaissance regiment of the Ghana Army based in Ho attempted to overthrow the NLC on April 17, 1967 at a spot close to the location of the current airport. The NLC consequently renamed the facility after him as an honor.
