The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that the government has concluded its evacuation exercise after the last batch of 41 Ghanaians arrived on Friday from South Africa following the recent xenophobic attacks.
Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nearly 2,000 Ghanaian citizens who voluntarily registered for evacuation were brought back home. The remains of two Ghanaians who were attacked and killed were also repatriated while one returnee died upon arrival in Accra, bringing the total number of deaths recorded in connection with the evacuation to three since May 2026.
Addressing the final batch of 41 returnees who arrived in Ghana on 4th September 2026, the Minister for Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his unwavering commitment to the welfare and safety of Ghanaians wherever they may be in the world.
The Minister assured the public that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would provide a full account of all funds expended throughout the evacuation process. He also expressed gratitude to the various allied agencies and private-sector partners whose support contributed to the successful evacuation exercise.
He urged the final batch of returnees not to lose hope, but rather to remain resilient and channel their time, skills and energy towards building a better Ghana.
The Minister further reiterated that, beyond the reintegration allowance provided by the Government, every returnee must prioritise their health and seek medical attention whenever necessary as they begin the process of rebuilding their lives back home.
