The Ghana Police Service in the Western Region has successfully intercepted two vehicles loaded with substances suspected to be cannabis, arresting three individuals in the process.
The vehicles, identified by registration numbers GE 8965-12 and GS 3368-17, were intercepted on Sunday at around 5:30 p.m. at the Assorku Barrier in the Shama Municipality and later at Nkroful Junction. The operation led to the discovery of 152 large bales, each containing approximately 80 compressed parcels wrapped in yellow packaging, suspected to be Indian hemp.
According to Superintendent Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, the Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer, officers stationed at the Assorku Barrier initially stopped a truck traveling from the Accra highway towards Takoradi. The vehicle was loaded with bags hidden under sawdust, containing the suspected cannabis. Although three occupants fled, one suspect was apprehended.
A follow-up operation at Nkroful Junction resulted in the interception of a second truck carrying similar substances.
In addition, two suspects, Kwabena Forson, 55, and Isaac Kwame Kontor, 44, were arrested after allegedly attempting to bribe officers with GH₵69,000 to release Moses Kweku Tawiah, 44, who had been arrested at the Assorku Barrier. The officers rejected the bribe and subsequently arrested Forson and Kontor.
Superintendent Adiku confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be arraigned before court if found guilty. She cautioned individuals involved in drug trafficking to cease such illegal activities, emphasizing that law enforcement remains vigilant throughout the region. She also praised the professionalism and alertness of the officers involved in preventing the drugs from reaching international markets.
