Manchester City secured a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash, with Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo delivering an impressive performance at the Etihad Stadium.
Semenyo opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, calmly tapping home a low cross from Jeremy Doku to register his second goal in as many games. The forward nearly added a second later in the match, but his effort was ruled out after Erling Haaland was adjudged to be in an offside position during the buildup.

The Ghana international has now scored in back-to-back cup matches, recording three goal contributions — two goals and one assist — since joining the Sky Blues from Bournemouth. His performances have been seen as a strong statement of intent as he continues to adapt to life at the club.
Semenyo’s form has not gone unnoticed by manager Pep Guardiola, who praised the attacker’s attitude and work rate after the game.
“He’s a very good guy who fits into the team well,” Guardiola said. “His attitude and work rate are excellent.”
The City boss added that Semenyo’s recent displays have put him firmly in contention for a regular starting role.
Manchester City sealed the win deep into stoppage time through Rayan Cherki, who finished off a low cut-back from Rayan Aït-Nouri to put the tie firmly in City’s favour ahead of the second leg.
Newcastle United had moments where they threatened to get back into the contest, but City’s defence remained resolute to preserve a clean sheet.
