Surge in Road Traffic Crashes During Christmas Attributed to Drunk Driving and Driver Fatigue

Authorities and community leaders have linked the rise in road traffic crashes during the Christmas festive period to drunk driving and inadequate rest by motorists.

Statistics have shown an alarming increase in road accidents in December 2025, with numerous fatalities reported. Notable incidents include a deadly crash involving occupants traveling from Accra to Ho, as well as severe accidents recorded on highways in the Central, Ashanti, and Northern regions.

According to Nii Armarh Ashiboye, clan head of the Tema Traditional Area, pressure from car owners on drivers to meet demanding sales targets contributes to reckless and hurried driving. He has urged the Ghana Police Service to intensify screening for drug abuse among drivers as part of efforts to reduce accidents.

Road traffic fatalities have been described by experts as a significant cause of mass deaths, surpassing some diseases, emphasizing the urgency of implementing stricter safety measures.

Data from the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) reveals that between January and November 2025, Ghana recorded over 13,000 road crashes involving approximately 22,000 vehicles, including private, commercial, and motorcycles. Fatalities during this period included 1,937 males and over 492 females.
