Strengthen transparency in political financing to safeguard Africa’s democracy- Veep

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman has urged African countries to strengthen accountability and transparency in political financing to safeguard democratic governance on the continent.

The call was contained in a speech delivered on her behalf by Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem at the opening of a three-day high-level regional convening on the monetization of politics in Africa in Accra.

The conference, themed “Advancing Reform, Accountability, and Democratic Integrity,” brought together political leaders, anti-corruption agencies, civil society organizations, development partners, and governance experts to discuss reforms aimed at improving transparency and accountability in political financing across the continent.

In the speech, the Vice President said the growing influence of money in politics poses a serious threat to democratic participation, weakens public confidence in institutions, and undermines sustainable development.

She noted that Ghana is taking steps to strengthen transparency and accountability in political financing through ongoing governance reforms.

According to the Vice President, the government is pursuing key legislative and policy initiatives, including the Conduct of Public Officers Bill and the National Ethics and Anti-Corruption Action Plan, to establish a comprehensive framework for regulating political party and campaign financing.
