The Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced a 43-year-old, Camila Alhassan, a TikToker, to one year imprisonment with hard labour after pleading guilty to offensive conduct conducive to breach of the peace.
She was convicted on her own plea last week after admitting to making offensive, insulting and derogatory remarks about the President of the Republic.
The sentence was imposed after a mandatory pregnancy test ordered by the court for all convicted females proved negative.
In sentencing, the court said the one-year custodial sentence is to serve as a deterrent to others.
According to the prosecution, the Ghana Police Service recently intercepted a video on TikTok circulated by the suspect in which she was seen making offensive and abusive statements against President John Dramani Mahama and his wife the 1st Lady Lordina Mahama.
The prosecution told the court that the remarks, which included insults and death wishes against the President, were likely to provoke a breach of the peace.
Following the circulation of the video, the Police launched a manhunt for the suspect.
With technical support from the National Signals Bureau (NSB), she was tracked and arrested on July 9, 2026, for investigations.
She was subsequently charged with offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace, an offence to which she pleaded guilty.
She was arraigned on two counts charges. While she was convicted on the second count, the Court said it does not have jurisdiction to entertain the first charge of “False Communication, contrary to Section 76 of the Electronic Communication Act, 2008 Act 778).”
