The campaign team of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has thrown its support behind former General Secretary John Boadu in the contest for the party’s National Chairmanship.
The decision follows consultations with grassroots activists, constituency actors, party elders, campaign leadership, and other stakeholders across the country, according to a statement issued by the Wontumi Campaign.
The campaign leadership said it reached the decision after visiting Chairman Wontumi at the facility in Nsawam, where he is currently being held on Friday, September 4, 2026.
In a statement issued on Tuesday September 8, the campaign team described the endorsement as a “deliberate and strategic choice” intended to advance what it considers to be the best interests of the NPP and its political future.
The campaign said its support would bring a broad grassroots network of activists, executives, communicators, and supporters behind Mr. Boadu’s bid.
“When grassroots strength meets institutional experience, and mobilization is matched with organization, the NPP becomes a formidable force for victory,” the campaign said.
The Wontumi Campaign said it believes Mr. Boadu is best positioned among the aspirants to lead the party back to its “winning ways” and contribute to efforts to return former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to the presidency in 2028.
The campaign also used the announcement to call for greater unity within the NPP ahead of the party’s internal elections and the 2028 general elections.
It said the party could not afford to expend its energy on factionalism and internal divisions when it needed to rebuild its structures and prepare for a return to government.
“The NPP’s overriding objective is to return to government in 2028. That requires unity, discipline, organization, and clarity of purpose,” the statement said.
The campaign further called for greater attention to the grassroots, respect for party structures, and recognition of the contribution of party members.
The Wontumi Campaign has directed members and supporters who previously organized around Chairman Wontumi to transfer their support to Mr. Boadu.
It specifically called on its national, regional, and constituency structures, electoral-area coordinators, polling-station executives, communicators, volunteers, and supporters to rally behind the former General Secretary.
