UTAG threatens strike on June 30 over condition-of-service grievances

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has threatened to embark on an industrial action if government fails to resolve what it terms several critical welfare and condition-of-service grievances by June 30, 2026. The decision according to a statement was arrived at during a statutory quarterly meeting on June 18, 2026. The move follows what the union describes as “deep frustration over repeated government delays which undermine the collective bargaining process”. According to the statement, if the government fails to take immediate action by the deadline, UTAG branches will initiate constitutional consultations within five working days to secure mandates for a nationwide strike.

The government through the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), National Labour Commission, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and other bodies are currently engaging with the union’s leadership to avoid any disruption to academic activities.
