President John Dramani Mahama has urged the Black Stars to approach their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Panama with determination, pride, and national purpose, assuring them of the full backing of the government and people of Ghana.
In a statement issued ahead of the Group L clash in Toronto, President Mahama described Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance as a reflection of the country’s resilience and fighting spirit.
“As you stand on the threshold of your first match against Panama in Toronto, the Government and the over thirty million people of Ghana stand firmly behind you,” he said.
He encouraged the players to draw inspiration from young Ghanaians who look up to them, urging them to see the match as an opportunity to make the nation proud.
“Play for the flag. Play for the children dreaming of greatness in your footsteps,” the President stated.
President Mahama noted that the team carries the hopes and identity of the entire nation onto the global stage.
“This fifth World Cup appearance is a testament to the resilient spirit of our nation. You carry more than a ball. You are carrying the hopes, dreams, and heritage of a people,” he said.
He added that support for the Black Stars extends across the country and beyond.
“From the streets of Chorkor to the plains of Bole, every Ghanaian heart beats in sync with yours,” he added.
The President also appealed to Ghanaians in the diaspora, particularly those in Canada and North America, to rally behind the team in large numbers to serve as the “12th man” in the stands.
He further disclosed that the government had secured official television broadcast rights to ensure nationwide access to the tournament, allowing all Ghanaians to follow the Black Stars’ campaign.
“The world is watching, and we are confident that the Black Star will shine brighter than ever before on this global stage,” he said.
