Parts of the Greater Accra region will experience interruption in power supply on Sunday, August 16, from 3:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
In a statement issued on Saturday, August 15, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) said the interruption is due to an emergency power infrastructure restoration exercise at Ashaiman, following damage to a transmission tower on the 161 kV Tema-Achimota transmission line.
According to GRIDCo, the tower was damaged after a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being carried out on its tank within the transmission line Right-of-Way.
“To facilitate the emergency replacement works and ensure the safety of personnel and the public, the power supply to some locations in the greater Accra region will be interrupted. GRIDCo engineers and technical teams will use this period to safely undertake the required works and restore the integrity of the transmission line,” the statement said.
The company has appealed for public patience and cooperation while the emergency exercise is carried out.
“GRIDCO sincerely apologizes to all affected customers for the inconvenience the planned outage will cause and appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as these critical emergency works are undertaken,” the company added.
The power transmission company has also renewed its warning against encroachment on transmission line Rights-of-Way, stressing that such areas are protected by law and are not intended for unrestricted occupation or commercial activity.
GRIDCo cited the Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (L.I. 542), as amended by L.I. 1737 of 2004, which prohibit activities that could interfere with the safe operation and maintenance of transmission infrastructure.
It said persons who have erected structures, established businesses, parked heavy vehicles, or undertaken activities such as welding and excavation within the corridors must cease such activities.
“All persons, businesses, land users, and other entities currently encroaching on its transmission line right away across the country must cease all unauthorized activities and vacate the affected corridors within the one-month period,” it added.
GRIDCo said it will, after the expiry of the stated period, work with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, relevant statutory institutions and security agencies to enforce the law and remove unauthorized structures and activities from the transmission corridors.
