The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspected gang leader and one other person in connection with the robbery attack on a Berekum Chelsea FC team bus, which led to the death of footballer Dominic Frimpong.
The incident occurred on the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
Following the attack, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a joint team of intelligence officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate Headquarters, the Anti-Robbery Unit, CID Headquarters, as well as the Ashanti South and Ashanti Regional Police Commands to track down the perpetrators.
On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, an intelligence-led operation at Atimatim in Kumasi resulted in the arrest of Mohammed Ahmed, also known as “I Can Do,” identified as the gang leader, together with another suspect, Bawa Gideon. The arrests followed a confrontation during which the suspects allegedly attempted to flee and opened fire on police.
One of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange and is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital under police guard. The other suspect remains in custody and is assisting with investigations.

During the operation, police retrieved a pistol loaded with two rounds of .32 ammunition, eleven BB cartridges, a locally manufactured weapon (“blantine”), pepper spray, desert boots, assorted mobile phones, and a black pullover.

During interrogation, Mohammed Ahmed reportedly admitted involvement in multiple robberies, including incidents at Nkawie and Fufuso, as well as the attack on the Berekum Chelsea FC bus. He also named three accomplices—Dauda, Huefe, and A.T.—who are currently on the run.

The police have since declared the three suspects wanted and are appealing to the public for information to aid in their arrest.
Dominic Frimpong, a player for Berekum Chelsea FC, lost his life during the robbery, an incident that has shocked the Ghanaian football community. Both the club and the Ghana Football Association have expressed deep sorrow over his death.
The Police Command has commended officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and has thanked the public for their cooperation. Authorities have assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and that all those involved will be brought to justice.
