Atletico Madrid Takes Firm Control of Copa Del Rey Semi-Final First Leg With a 4-0 Win Over Barcelona

In a stunning display of power and precision, Atlético Madrid delivered a resounding 4-0 defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final clash at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. The comprehensive victory gives Diego Simeone’s side a significant advantage heading into the second leg, leaving Barcelona with a monumental task to overcome.

From the whistle, Atlético Madrid asserted their dominance, quickly capitalizing on Barcelona’s early woes.

The match barely began when disaster struck for Barcelona in the sixth minute. A routine backpass from defender Eric Garcia inexplicably slipped under goalkeeper Joan Garcia’s boot, rolling into the net for a shocking own goal that set a somber tone for the visitors.

Atlético wasted no time in piling on the pressure. Just eight minutes later, a brilliant team move saw Antoine Griezmann double the lead. Ademola Lookman initiated the attack, feeding Julian Alvarez, who then found Nahuel Molina. Molina’s precise cross set up Griezmann, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, sending the home crowd into raptures.

The red and white onslaught continued. In the 33rd minute, Ademola Lookman etched his name on the scoreboard. Giuliano Simeone’s strong run and cross found Alvarez, who cleverly squared it for an unmarked Lookman to fire home, making it 3-0.

The first half reached a crescendo just before the break when Julian Alvarez broke his recent scoring drought in spectacular fashion. Combining once again with Lookman, Alvarez received a perfectly weighted pass and unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner, securing a sensational 4-0 lead for Atlético Madrid as the teams headed into halftime.

Despite controlling 70% of possession in the first half, Barcelona found themselves unable to penetrate Atlético’s resolute defense and capitalize on their chances. Goalkeeper Juan Musso was in superb form, thwarting any attempts to narrow the deficit in the second half. Barcelona thought they had a lifeline when Pau Cubarsi found the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside after a lengthy VAR review. The Catalans’ miserable night was further compounded in the 86th minute when Eric Garcia, already haunted by the early own goal, received a red card after another VAR intervention.

This commanding performance leaves Atlético Madrid firmly in the driver’s seat as they look towards the second leg at Camp Nou on March 3rd, where Barcelona will need nothing short of a miracle to turn the tie around.
