Boakra Inland Port Project: Prof. Gyampo confers with Otumfuo as he pledges support for project

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has pledged support for the Boankra Inland Port Project. This follows discussions between the Asantehene and Chief Executive for the Ghana Shippers Authority Prof. Ransford Gyampo today, January 16, 2026 at Manhyia during a courtesy call.

According to Prof. Gyampo the call on Otumfuo is ahead of a planned visit by the Ghana Shippers Authority to Manhyia in the coming weeks. The discussions centered on the “need for the completion of Phase One of the Boankra Project. He pledged his support to help us get the needed funding to complete the Boankra Project” Prof. Gyampo disclosed to Accra News Online.

The Boankra Project

The Boankra Inland Port project in Ghana’s Ashanti Region is a major logistics hub designed to ease congestion at seaports, boost trade with landlocked neighbors (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger), and support regional economic growth by offering customs, warehousing, and freight services. Key infrastructure, including land acquisition (400+ acres), foundational works, and some road networks, is complete, with Phase One nearing completion as of late 2025, though challenges with funding and contractor payments have impacted timelines. The government remains committed to its timely completion, seeing it as crucial for Ghana’s trade facilitation, especially under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Key Objectives & Benefits
  • Logistics Hub: Function as a full-service logistics platform with bonded warehousing, customs clearance, container handling, and distribution.
  • Trade Facilitation: Serve as a gateway for transit traffic to landlocked West African nations and reduce costs for importers/exporters in Ghana’s middle and northern regions.
  • Economic Growth: Stimulate industrial development, investment, and job creation in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
  • Port Efficiency: Reduce pressure and congestion at the main seaports of Tema and Takoradi.
Project Status (as of late 2025)
  • Land: Over 400 acres acquired.
  • Infrastructure: Foundational works, drainage, and internal roads are largely complete.
  • Phase One: Nearing completion, with works ongoing on terminal facilities, operational offices, and an interchange.
  • Challenges: Financial constraints and outstanding payments to contractors have delayed progress, prompting government reaffirmations of commitment.
