‘I had Movenpick for dinner and Starbites for breakfast’- Akpaloo on EOCO detention

Founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana, Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has described his arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as politically motivated.

Mr. Akpaloo was arrested on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at his residence in Kumasi and transported to Accra. Despite being granted police bail under strict conditions, including a GHC 10 million bond with two sureties, he remained in custody until his release on Thursday, September 11, 2025.

Speaking to Naa Dedei Tettey on the Morning Starr on Starr FM, Mr. Akpaloo maintained his innocence, dismissing charges of causing financial loss to the state as frivolous.

He claimed the government actually owes him GHC 4.5 million for a road project he carried out at Goaso in the Ahafo Region using his own resources.

“They themselves know that I’ve not committed any crime. The job I did, I used my own resources to build that road from scratch. And the government is owing me 4.5 million cedis on that project. When the plane crash happened, I passed a comment, and that triggered all this,” he said.

Mr. Akpaloo also revealed that he was forewarned about his arrest. He said popular Ghanaian social commentator Appiah Stadium called him to inform him: “After they finish the burial of the people, they’ll come for me. So, I had made my bag ready with all the stuff I’d need. When they came for me, I carried my bag because I knew what was coming.”

He added that despite the political motives, neither the team at his residence nor EOCO officers manhandled him. “I don’t have anything against EOCO. They were acting on instructions and were all professionals. Nobody disrespected or abused me in any form. When they came to my house, I was not manhandled either.”

Reflecting on his brief detention, Mr. Akpaloo described it as a time to unplug. “While I was there, my family visited during visiting hours. Friends from both the NDC and NPP came to see me. Honestly, it helped because I didn’t realize how addicted I was to my phone and social media. Waking up without my phone made me realize that. So, I had a comfortable time.”

He also joked about his meals: “I was asking them to order me food from Movenpick every evening, and in the morning, they were getting me Starbites for breakfast. Of course, it was from my pocket.”
