Ledzokuku Assembly demolishes unauthorized billboard at Flowerpot Interchange

The Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly has demolished an unauthorized billboard mounted at the Flowerpot Interchange in Accra, in a move to clamp down on illegal outdoor advertising structures.

The operation, led by Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Israel Adjetey Otchwenmah, was carried out ahead of a directive from the Ministry of Roads and Highways, which later confirmed that the billboard had not received the necessary approvals.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 20, the Ministry said the structure violated national advertising and road safety regulations, citing its non-compliance with Section 5 of the Ghana Standards Authority’s Advertisement Specification for Outdoor Signs (GS 847:2019), Sections 11 and 15 of the Advertisements Act (Act 540), and Section 188 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180).

The Ministry expressed growing concern about the rising number of unauthorized billboards across the country, describing them as illegal and a breach of both safety standards and constitutional provisions.

It also referenced a disclaimer from the Students Loan Trust Fund, which disassociated itself from the billboard and warned against the misuse of its logo.

Following the removal exercise, the Ministry directed the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly to collaborate with the Department of Urban Roads to clear all other unauthorized billboards at the interchange.

It further urged metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies to work closely with regional road agencies before granting permits for advertising along road corridors.

The Ministry also appealed to the Advertising Association of Ghana to strictly enforce its code of conduct on outdoor advertising, emphasizing government’s commitment to safeguarding road safety and protecting public infrastructure.
