The Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) has expressed sorrow over the fatal helicopter crash on August 6 that claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians, describing the accident as a personal tragedy.
In a statement signed by the Dean, Simon Agianab, the PPC described the incident as a deeply personal loss for the community of journalists who cover parliamentary affairs.
“As the umbrella body of journalists who cover the workings of Parliament, this loss feels deeply personal. We remember the late Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah’s last engagement on the floor of the House as Defence Minister, where he came to answer questions with his characteristic composure, clarity, and dedication to public service,” Mr. Agianab noted.
The statement also paid tribute to the late Minister for Environment, Science and Technology and Tamale Central MP, Hon. Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, recalling his insightful contributions during debates in the House.
“His interventions were often passionate, grounded in principle, and reflective of a deep commitment to the welfare of his constituents and the larger national interest,” the statement said.
The PPC extended condolences to the families of all victims, the Government of Ghana, Parliament, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We mourn with the nation, knowing that their service and sacrifices will be remembered as part of Ghana’s democratic and development journey. May their souls, and the souls of all who perished in the line of duty, rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
The helicopter crash, which occurred in the Ashanti Region and claimed the lives of two ministers of state, a sitting Member of Parliament and military personnel, has plunged the nation into a period of mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum and civil society.
