President John Dramani Mahama has announced that a state funeral will be held on Friday, 15 August 2025, to honour the eight victims of the recent military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
The solemn ceremony, to be held at Independence Square in Accra, will pay tribute to Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice-Chairman Samuel Sarpong.
The rest were former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East Samuel Aboagye, and three Ghana Armed Forces personnel — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
President Mahama described the occasion as “a moment of national mourning and gratitude” for the service and sacrifice of the deceased. “Their contributions to Ghana’s peace, security, and development will never be forgotten,” he said.
“On Friday, 15th August, an inter-denominational state funeral will be held for the eight heroes at the Black Star Square,” he announced.
The victims lost their lives when a Z-9 military helicopter went off radar and crashed in a dense forest en route to Obuasi, with no survivor.
Government has invited the public to join in the ceremony, which will feature full military honours, interfaith prayers, and a ceremonial laying of wreaths.
Flags across the country will continue to fly at half-mast until the funeral is concluded.
