The International Federation of Air Traffic Safety Electronics Associations (IFATSEA) has joined in mourning the victims of the recent helicopter crash in Ghana that claimed the lives of two senior ministers and six others.
In a statement released on Thursday, August 7, 2025, and signed by IFATSEA President Ing. Frank Kofi Apeagyei alongside Executive Secretary Meaghan Olmstead, the organisation described the tragedy as one that had sent shockwaves through the global aviation community.
The fatal crash occurred in a dense forest during a trip to Obuasi. Those who lost their lives included Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and NDC Vice-Chairman Samuel Sarpong.
Also among the dead were three members of the Ghana Armed Forces — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. The Z-9 military helicopter reportedly went off radar shortly before the crash. No one survived.
“We mourn the loss of these distinguished public and civil servants whose lives were cut short in service to their nation,” IFATSEA said. “Their dedication, leadership, and commitment to Ghana’s progress will be remembered with deep respect.”
The organisation extended its condolences to the Government of Ghana, the bereaved families, and all affected by the tragedy, while praising the efforts of aviation authorities and emergency responders handling the aftermath.
“As an organisation committed to aviation safety, IFATSEA reaffirms its dedication to supporting efforts that strengthen the resilience and safety of air operations worldwide,” the statement read. “This tragedy is a reminder of the importance of collaboration, vigilance, and continuous improvement in aviation systems.”
The federation further stressed that close coordination between civilian and military aviation authorities was vital for safe and efficient airspace management, preventing future accidents, and strengthening national resilience.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find strength and comfort in God Almighty,” the statement concluded.
