Japan Ninja certification exam attracts 131 candidates from around the world

A special ninja certification examination in Japan has attracted 131 participants from across the country and abroad, as enthusiasts tested their knowledge and skills in the ancient art of ninjutsu.

The Koka-ryu Ninja Certification Exam, held in Koka City in Shiga Prefecture, is designed to preserve the history and traditions of the Koka School of ninjas, a group renowned for its shadow warrior techniques more than 500 years ago.

The examination features three levels — beginner, intermediate, and advanced — with candidates assessed through written tests, shuriken throwing skills, and ninja attire.

Participants this year included people from Singapore and Hong Kong, with ages ranging from 9 to 76 years. Out of the 131 candidates, 93 took part in the beginner category, 28 in the intermediate level, and 10 in the advanced category.

Beginner candidates received additional points for wearing ninja costumes and demonstrated their skills in throwing shuriken, while intermediate participants faced more challenging questions on Koka ninja history and traditions.

Advanced candidates were required to submit written reports alongside the examination.

Organisers from the Koka Ninja Research Association say the annual event is aimed at keeping Japan’s ninja heritage alive and promoting interest in the culture among younger generations.

The exam recorded pass rates of 90 percent for beginners, 70 percent for intermediate candidates, and 55 percent for those at the advanced level.
