The Mampong Akuapem Apesemakahene, Nana Yirenkyi , has warned individuals on social media to stop spreading false information about the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku.
According to him, claims circulating on social media that Mr. Awuku has been arrested by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) are false and should be disregarded.
Nana Yirenkyi explained that the MP was present at the Eastern Regional Delegates Conference held at Asamankese yesterday, where he participated in the voting process before leaving for other engagements.
He described Mr. Awuku as a hardworking and well-respected Member of Parliament who enjoys the support and goodwill of many people.
“Some people are deliberately trying to tarnish the image of our brother and hardworking MP, but their efforts will not succeed,” he said.
He further noted that if an elected MP had been arrested by EOCO, the appropriate authorities would be expected to issue an official statement confirming the arrest.
He therefore urged the public to rely on verified information rather than unsubstantiated claims circulating on social media.
Nana Yirenkyi cautioned those allegedly behind the false information that Ghana has laws governing such conduct and that anyone found responsible for deliberately spreading false information could be required to answer for their actions before the appropriate authorities and the courts.
He stressed that attempts to damage the reputation of Hon. Sammi Awuku through false allegations would not succeed and called on the public to exercise restraint and verify information before sharing it.
