The Office of the Special Prosecutor says it is assessing allegations of extortion and related conduct made by Ghana Gold Board Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, against the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The OSP says it has received three petitions in connection with the allegations — a joint petition submitted by two persons and two separate petitions from other individuals.
The Office says it will assess the allegations to determine whether they fall within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted.
The development follows an escalating public disagreement between Mr. Gyamfi and Mr. Afenyo-Markin over concerns surrounding the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and reported losses of about US$1.7 billion in 2025.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin has questioned the reported losses and called for accountability over the programme, while Mr. Gyamfi has accused the Minority Leader of mounting what he describes as a smear campaign against GoldBod.
Mr. Gyamfi subsequently described Mr. Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist”, alleging that the attacks on GoldBod were part of an attempt to pressure individuals into settlements. He has challenged the Minority Leader to take legal action if he believes the allegation is defamatory.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin has rejected the allegations and indicated that he intends to pursue appropriate legal remedies over what he considers false and defamatory claims.
The OSP has, however, not said that it has opened a formal investigation. It says it will first determine whether the matter falls within its legal mandate and whether further action is necessary.
