Australian Erin Patterson found guilty of all counts in mushroom murders case

Erin Patterson has been found guilty of murdering three of her relatives and attempting to murder a fourth, following a fatal lunch she hosted in 2023 at her home in Leongatha, regional Victoria.

The 50-year-old served six beef Wellington dishes to family members, which were later found to contain death cap mushrooms—a highly toxic species responsible for the majority of mushroom-related deaths worldwide.

Among the victims were her former in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, all of whom died within days of the meal. Ian Wilkinson, a local pastor and Heather’s husband, survived after spending weeks in hospital.

Prosecutors alleged Patterson intentionally added the poisonous mushrooms to the meal, lied to police during the investigation, and attempted to destroy evidence. However, they acknowledged she had no clear motive.

In her defence, Patterson claimed the mushrooms were included by accident and said she had lied out of panic. She maintained she never intended to harm anyone.

After hearing more than two months of evidence, the jury rejected her explanation. Sentencing is expected in the coming weeks, with national attention now turning to what penalty Patterson will face.
