Kwabena Agyepong hails NPP constitutional reforms, raises alarm over grassroots neglect

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has lauded the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) for largely adopting his proposed constitutional reforms aimed at reshaping the party’s internal electoral processes.

In a strongly worded message to delegates attending the party’s Annual Conference, Agyepong described the endorsement of a limited expansion of the NPP’s electoral college as a “significant step forward.” The new structure includes past National Executives, Regional Executives, Members of Parliament, Ministers and their Deputies, MMDCEs, and Constituency Executives.

However, Agyepong expressed grave concern over the exclusion of former polling station executives and electoral area coordinators, describing it as a “gross injustice” to the party’s foundational grassroots base.

“The polling station is the heart and soul of the party,” Agyepong stated. “It is where volunteerism thrives and loyalty is tested—not for money, but for love of party and country. Expanding participation at the top while excluding the base only serves to alienate the very people who carry the party through its toughest times.”

He warned that the current decision risks deepening dissatisfaction among the party’s grassroots, who are already grappling with low morale. Agyepong called for a more inclusive electoral college system that minimizes vote-buying and champions merit over financial influence.

“Let us not allow manipulation and confusion to take root. We must build a party that honors every hand that lifts a flag, knocks on a door, and calls for fairness,” he urged.

In his concluding remarks, he called on constituency executives to push for the inclusion of all past ward and polling station executives and coordinators dating back to 1992, the year of the NPP’s founding.
