Ghana and Zambia to Host Fugu and Kente Trade Exhibition Next Month

Ghana is set to host a Fugu and Kente Trade Exhibition in Zambia next month, following rising interest among Zambians in the traditional Ghanaian outfit. The surge in demand reportedly followed public comments by Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, who expressed a desire to place orders.

The exhibition is part of a broader package of agreements reached during President John Dramani Mahama’s state visit to Zambia, where both countries signed a Comprehensive Partnership aimed at deepening trade, security, investment, and people-to-people ties.

Key Outcomes of the Ghana–Zambia Partnership

Under the new cooperation framework, the two countries agreed to:

  • Adopt visa-free travel for citizens of both countries, allowing stays of up to 30 days without a visa.

  • Secure fintech contracts worth over $50 million in the short term, projected to create around 8,000 jobs.

  • Strengthen natural resource cooperation to promote value addition and environmentally responsible practices.

  • Sign a defence cooperation agreement to expand collaboration and create new operational frontiers for their armed forces.

  • Provide technical assistance in key sectors: Ghana will help Zambia establish a Minerals Commission and Goldbod to maximize gains from natural resources, while Zambia will support Ghana in solar energy regulation and scientifically improved seedling production.

  • Standardize product certification to ease cross-border trade.

  • Sign a Bilateral Air Services Agreement to enhance aviation cooperation, paving the way for direct flights.

The planned Fugu and Kente Trade Exhibition aims to capitalize on social media buzz and growing interest in Ghanaian fashion. It is expected to boost Ghana’s creative economy and expand Zambia’s retail and cultural markets, turning diplomatic goodwill into tangible economic gains.

The Ghana–Zambia partnership now spans culture, technology, aviation, defence, and industrial development, signaling a deepening of ties that goes beyond traditional diplomacy.
