Civil Society Organization in the natural resources sector, Lands and Mines Watch Ghana has hailed Ghana’s participation in the recent Fifth Local Content Compliance Forum, held from 22 to 24 July 2026 in Tanzania. The forum held under the theme “From Dialogue to Action: Building a Resilient Mining Sector through Local Content and Industrialization.” saw many participants from across the continent. A delegation from the Ghana Minerals Commission led by deputy CEO Victoria Awuni represented Ghana.
The forum, organised annually since 2022 by Tanzania’s Mining Commission under the Ministry of Minerals, brings together mineral licensees, service providers, government ministries, academic institutions, and international stakeholders to review progress and chart a way forward on local content in the mining sector.
Ghana’s Minerals Commission was invited to send representatives to actively participate in presentations and panel discussions, in recognition of the country’s standing in local content implementation within Africa’s extractives sector.
Victoria Awuni delivered a presentation on the country’s “Experience on Localization Program,” sharing insights on how local content and localisation initiatives have contributed to Ghana’s economic growth and development within the mining sector. She also featured on a panel themed “Beyond Compliance: Transforming Local Content into Industrial Growth, Supplier Development and Lasting Economic Impact,” alongside other regional and international experts.
The forum’s discussions centred on deepening the participation of local citizens in mining value chains, upgrading local skills, opening new opportunities for domestic businesses, and strengthening linkages between international mining firms and local expertise.
According to a statement signed by the Executive Director of Lands and Mines Watch Ghana (LMWG) Kwame Owusu Danso Esq, his outfit sees the engagement as very critical in advancement and strengthening of the country’s local content policies.
“As LMWG continues its work promoting transparency, accountability, and equity in Ghana’s lands and mining sector, forums such as this offers valuable comparative lessons on how local content commitments can move from paper to measurable, lasting economic impact for citizens.” He stated.
“LMWG will continue to monitor developments in local content implementation, both in Ghana and across the region, as part of its broader advocacy for a mining sector that works for local communities.”
