Sierra Leone First Lady faces criticism over comments on FGM

Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, has faced criticism from health professionals, survivors and human rights advocates over comments regarding female genital mutilation (FGM).

The First Lady has denied supporting the practice but said she would not openly condemn FGM until she sees “reliable data” showing the extent of harm caused by the practice.

Her comments have triggered concerns among activists who argue that statements from public officials can influence efforts to eliminate FGM.

More than 20 health professionals, politicians and human rights advocates have written to the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development, calling for clarification over her position.

FGM, which involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia, is widely recognised by international organisations as a violation of human rights and is associated with serious health consequences.

Sierra Leone remains among countries with some of the highest rates of FGM globally, with national surveys indicating that a large majority of women have undergone the practice.

The First Lady said her remarks had been taken out of context and insisted that she does not support forced procedures.
