GMA demands immediate reinstatement of suspended KATH CEO as it warns of further action

Accra, Ghana — June – The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called for the immediate reversal of the suspension of the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, warning that continued actions against health professionals could trigger further measures by the Association.

The demand follows an emergency meeting of the GMA’s National Executive Council held on Saturday, June 6, after the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, directed the KATH Board to suspend the hospital’s CEO for two weeks.

The suspension was issued after hospital management temporarily halted the admission of new emergency cases on June 3 due to severe congestion at the Accident and Emergency Centre.

In a statement signed by GMA President, Prof. Dr. Ernest Yorke, the Association described the suspension as unjustified and maintained that the actions taken by KATH management were professionally appropriate and aligned with international best practices in patient safety and healthcare administration.

“The actions taken by management were the right and proper professional and administrative decision in line with best practices in patient safety and responsible healthcare leadership,” the statement emphasized.

The GMA argued that both the initial query and subsequent suspension of the CEO lacked sufficient justification and should not have been imposed.

As part of its resolutions, the Association demanded the immediate withdrawal of the suspension directive and the reinstatement of Dr. Baidoo within three working days.

The Association also expressed full support for the ongoing industrial action by the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA), whose members began an indefinite withdrawal of services on June 6 in protest against the suspension.

KADA has outlined several conditions for ending the strike, including the reversal of the CEO’s suspension, the establishment of clear policies for managing situations where emergency capacity is exceeded, and firm timelines for the operationalisation of Sewua Hospital and Afari Military Hospital.

The GMA criticized what it described as actions by the Health Minister that have directly or indirectly incited public hostility toward health workers, warning that such developments could further demoralize healthcare professionals and contribute to increasing incidents of violence against medical personnel.
