President John Dramani Mahama has directed the formation of an inter-agency task force to develop a detailed roadmap for preventing narcotics trafficking through Ghana’s borders.
The directive follows an urgent meeting between the President and security chiefs on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at which he received an update on investigations into recent drug trafficking cases involving Ghana’s ports.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency, 10 individuals, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), are currently being held as investigations continue.
The meeting reviewed the country’s existing security structures and systems for detecting and preventing the movement of illicit drugs through its borders.
President Mahama subsequently directed that an inter-agency task force be established to translate the outcomes of the meeting into a comprehensive roadmap.
The task force has been given two weeks to present its recommendations on measures to strengthen controls and prevent narcotics trafficking through Ghana’s borders.
The Presidency’s statement, signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the meeting was focused on strengthening the systems and structures required to address the emerging concerns.
