GTEC flags 62 unrecognised tertiary institutions operating in Ghana

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, GTEC, has named 62 institutions it says are not recognised in Ghana, warning the public to be cautious of certificates issued by these entities.

The Commission, in a notice issued on April 17, says the affected institutions include universities, colleges and seminaries from across the globe, some of which are operating within Ghana.

Among the local institutions cited are Debest College of Science, Arts and Business, Doxa Open University, Quest International University, and Kingdom Living Bible Institute in Kumasi.

GTEC says the move is part of efforts to protect the integrity of Ghana’s tertiary education system and shield students and employers from substandard or fraudulent academic qualifications.

The Commission did not detail specific concerns for each institution but indicated they may lack proper accreditation or fail to meet required academic standards.

The warning has serious implications for students and graduates, as qualifications from these institutions may not be recognised for employment, further education, or professional licensing in Ghana.

GTEC is therefore urging prospective students, parents and employers to verify the accreditation status of institutions through its official channels before enrolling or accepting any academic certificates.

The directive takes immediate effect.
