Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the late Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been officially appointed as Iran’s new supreme leader, marking the first father-to-son succession in the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution.
The announcement came on Sunday from the clerical body responsible for selecting Iran’s highest authority, with immediate pledges of loyalty from political and military institutions across the country. The defense council stated, “We will obey the commander-in-chief until the last drop of our blood,” signaling widespread support from Iran’s core power structures, including the Revolutionary Guards and parliament.
The appointment comes as the region enters the tenth day of a war triggered by a US-Israeli strike that killed Ali Khamenei on 28 February. In response to the new leadership, Israel launched a series of strikes targeting central Iranian infrastructure and Iran-backed groups in Lebanon, while Iranian forces and proxies carried out drone and rocket attacks in Iraq, Bahrain, and the broader region.
US President Donald Trump criticized the appointment as “unacceptable” and suggested that Iran’s next leader would face resistance unless approved by the United States. He indicated that any decision on ending the conflict would be coordinated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has largely stayed out of public political life and never held elected office. Analysts describe him as a behind-the-scenes powerbroker with strong ties to conservative clerics and the Revolutionary Guards. Supporters view him as a figure of continuity with Iran’s revolutionary ideology, while critics warn that the move signals a shift toward hereditary leadership in a state founded to oppose dynastic rule.
The escalating conflict has already impacted global markets, with oil prices surging more than 25% on Monday due to attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which handles about 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.
As Iran consolidates its new leadership amid intense regional tensions, analysts warn that the country faces both internal and external challenges that could redefine Middle East geopolitics in the coming months.
