The Government of Ghana has issued an official travel advisory urging prospective Umrah pilgrims and all nationals planning travel to the Middle East to exercise extreme caution and reconsider non-essential journeys amid escalating regional tensions.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Regional Integration, authorities cautioned that heightened hostilities in key parts of the Middle East, particularly following recent coordinated military actions involving major powers, have significantly affected regional security, disrupted international flight operations and triggered airspace closures that may impact travel to and from Saudi Arabia, the destination for Umrah pilgrims.
The Ministry advised Ghanaians intending to embark on Umrah pilgrimages to “defer travel until the security situation stabilises,” emphasizing that unpredictable developments could pose risks to personal safety and travel logistics. Prospective pilgrims, especially those yet to depart, were urged to closely monitor official communications and liaise with accredited travel agents before finalising any travel plans.
Ghanaians already in the region were told to remain vigilant, comply with local directives, avoid large gatherings and sensitive locations, and maintain regular contact with Ghana’s diplomatic missions. Government officials stressed that the safety and security of citizens remain a top priority, pointing to ongoing assessments and preparedness measures for possible emergency responses, including evacuation if necessary.
The advisory comes amidst growing international concern over the escalating conflict’s potential to affect commercial aviation and pilgrim travel routines, with several countries globally issuing similar guidance to their citizens planning Umrah or other travel to the region.
Ghana’s Ministry said further updates would be provided as the situation evolves, recommending that travellers maintain updated contact details with relevant Saudi Arabian authorities and Ghana’s embassies and consulates.
