Karim Zito resigns as Asante Kotoko Head Coach following FA Cup exit

Karim Zito resigns as Abdul Karim Zito Kabutey has officially stepped down from his role as Head Coach of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, with his resignation effective immediately. The club confirmed the development on Monday, February 9, 2026, and swiftly accepted his decision, extending their gratitude for his contributions and wishing him success in his future endeavors.

Zito’s departure comes on the heels of Asante Kotoko’s disappointing exit from the MTN FA Cup. The Porcupine Warriors were eliminated in the Round of 16 after a 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Aduana FC on Sunday, February 8, 2026. This defeat appears to have been the culmination of mounting pressure stemming from the team’s inconsistent performances in the Ghana Premier League.

A Look Back at Zito’s Tenure:

Zito initially took over as interim head coach in April 2025 before being handed the permanent reins in July 2025 with a two-year contract. During his 11 months at the helm, he led Kotoko to some notable successes:

– *2024/25 MTN FA Cup:* Guided the team to victory in the prestigious cup competition.

– *2025 President Cup:* Secured this title, showcasing the team’s ability to perform in key fixtures.

– *Toyota Cup:* Led Kotoko to triumph over South African giants Kaizer Chiefs FC.

Despite these cup successes, the team’s league form had been a point of concern. At the time of his resignation, Asante Kotoko sat fifth in the Ghana Premier League table, eight points adrift of league leaders Medeama SC.

Behind the Scenes: Pressure Mounts

Sources close to the club suggest that Zito’s position had become increasingly precarious due to the team’s struggles for consistency. It is rumored that his resignation may have pre-empted a potential dismissal by the club, as management was reportedly “not fully satisfied” with the overall results. There were also discussions regarding his contract, which reportedly included a GHS 120,000 compensation package if he were sacked, a clause that would be waived if the team lost four consecutive matches.

The news has ignited a passionate response from the fanbase, with many expressing their frustration over the frequent coaching changes and the perceived instability within the club’s management and on-field performance.

What’s Next for the Porcupine Warriors?

Asante Kotoko now faces the urgent task of finding a new Head Coach ahead of a crucial Super Clash against arch-rivals Hearts of Oak, scheduled for Sunday, February 14. In the interim, Hamza Obeng, who is part of the Asante Kotoko youth team coaching staff, is expected to step in and lead the senior squad for the upcoming match. The club is anticipated to announce a permanent replacement in the coming days.
