Ghana’s Anti-Corruption Fight Stalls as Country Drops to 76 in Global CPI Ranking

Anti-corruption organisation Transparency International Ghana has blamed the withdrawal of corruption cases involving members of the governing administration, weak law enforcement, and declining political accountability for Ghana’s stalled fight against corruption.

According to the organisation’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), Ghana scored 43 out of 100, a marginal increase from 42 in 2024.

Despite the slight improvement, analysts say the change is too small to indicate real progress, noting that Ghana’s score has largely stagnated over the past six years. The country also dropped five places, ranking 76th out of 182 countries assessed.

Ghana’s CPI score has fluctuated over the past decade, peaking at 48 in 2014 before falling to 40 in 2017. It later improved slightly to 41 in 2018 and 2019, which Transparency International Ghana linked to public reaction to a change in government. The organisation noted that the country’s current position reflects ongoing corruption challenges, weak compliance with legal rules, institutional strain, and interference in the work of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies.

The report also noted that steps taken in 2025 to increase transparency in corruption investigations, including actions by the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the removal of the former Chief Justice, have not yet improved public perception.
