53 Nigerian Nationals Arrested in Cybercrime Crackdown Across Accra

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, has announced the arrest of 53 Nigerian nationals in a coordinated cybercrime operation across parts of Accra.

In a Facebook post, the minister said intelligence gathered over the past 48 hours by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) uncovered several suspected cybercrime centres operating in East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba.

According to him, the intelligence revealed that young men were being exploited and coerced by kingpins to engage in cybercrime activities at the locations.

Acting on the CSA-led intelligence, a joint team made up of National Security Operations, the Cyber Security Authority, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, and the Police SWAT Unit carried out coordinated operations on January 16 and 17, 2026.

During the raids, nine Nigerian nationals were arrested as suspects, while 44 others believed to be victims were rescued. The victims were found in apartments operating laptop computers.

Searches conducted at the locations led to the retrieval of 52 mobile phones, 62 laptop computers, and two pump-action guns.

The arrests were recorded as follows: East Legon Hills – 5, Afienya – 11, Kwabenya – 10, Weija – 10, and Tuba – 17, bringing the total number arrested to 53.

Sam George said all the individuals have been profiled and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for safekeeping and further investigations.

He cautioned foreign nationals coming to Ghana to verify claims made by persons who lure them into the country under false pretences.

The minister added that some individuals picked up in earlier operations have already been processed by the Ghana Immigration Service and INTERPOL and handed over to Nigerian law enforcement authorities at the Seme border, while others are facing prosecution in Ghana.

“Protecting Ghana’s cyber image internationally is non-negotiable,” he stated, commending the CSA and partner security agencies for the operation.
