Is Abu Trica Really Sick? Uncovering the operation that led to his arrest over alleged $8m romance-scam

News of arrest of popular Ghanaian social media influencer or alleged notorious cybercriminal Frederick Kumi popularly known as Abu Trica over his involvement in an $8m romance-scam weeks ago went viral. News of a court order for him to be taken to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for treatment has equally raised some questions. Is Abu Trica really sick? What was the basis for the order from the Gbese District Court? What game is being played?

Abu Trica according to United States prosecutors used AI tools to create fake online identities, targeting victims through social media and dating sites, earning their trust then extorting their money.

He faces charges in the US of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and a money laundering conspiracy and faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

The 31-year-old was arrested from his base in Swedru in a joint operation between Ghanaian and US authorities. The US is seeking the extradition of Abu Trica to face charges. But do you know how the alleged cybercriminal was finally arrested. According to Accra News Online sources, the operation lasted for more than 12-hours with 3 teams deployed to 3 locations simultaneously. The operation eventually led to Abu Trica’s arrest in one of the locations in Swedru in the Central Region of Ghana.

Abu Trica according to sources was subsequently placed under arrest after his rights had been read to him. A short video from the 12-hour long operation circulated on social media got many people including lawyers questioning the appropriateness of questions put to Abu Trica about his name and occupation during interrogation. Accra News can however confirm all the 3 suspects including Abu Trica had been read their rights and formally placed under arrest and thus the questions were to elicit their identities for the records.

Upon Abu Trica’s arrest he informed investigators that he had a pre-arranged appointment with his dentist. Thus after his first appearance in court, investigators in the company of his lawyers took him to the police hospital to see a dentist since his appointment with his personal dentist was no longer a viable option.

Lawyers for Abu Trica led by Oliver Barker Vormawor however subsequently secured an order from the Gbese district court on December 23, 2025 for Abu Trica to be sent to the “University of Ghana Medical Centre for further treatment sponsored by the state.”

Checks by Accra News have revealed the said order secured ex parte has not been served on the state. Again, the development has come to authorities as a surprise since the suspect has never complained of any ailment since returning from the Police Hospital where he saw a dentist.

There were viral stories about the difficulties in proving the fraud allegations against Abu Trica since no property was registered in his name. According to the narrative, the development makes it difficult for the state to prove its case against the suspect for his extradition to the United States.

Curiously however, Abu Trica’s lawyers applied for bail for all his accomplices but chose not to do same for him. The development has left many wondering whether indeed the case against Abu Trica is a frivolous as some people put it.

Abu Trica returns to court on January 13, 2026 and Accra News will keenly monitor and update readers accordingly.
