The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) says a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line caused widespread power interruptions across parts of the country on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
According to GRIDCo, the incident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. and triggered the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal power plants as part of the National Interconnected Transmission System’s protection mechanisms.
The company said the automatic shutdown was necessary to safeguard the integrity and stability of the national power transmission system, but resulted in the loss of electricity supply to some parts of the country.
In a statement issued by its Corporate Communications Section, GRIDCo said its engineers, working in close coordination with other power sector agencies, immediately moved to isolate the affected transmission line and commenced the safe and systematic restoration of the power system.
“Power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, and restoration efforts are progressing steadily,” the company said.
GRIDCo assured customers in the remaining affected areas that technical teams had been fully mobilised and were working with urgency to restore electricity supply as quickly and safely as possible.
The transmission company expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage and appealed to the public for patience, understanding and cooperation as restoration efforts continue.
GRIDCo said it would provide further updates as more information becomes available.
The latest incident comes amid continuing efforts by power sector agencies to maintain the reliability and stability of Ghana’s electricity transmission system.
