Two Communities in Asuogyaman Connected to National Grid as Government Aims for 90% Electricity Coverage by 2026

Two communities in the Asuogyaman Constituency—Awurahae and Sapor—have finally been connected to the national electricity grid, ending decades of living without power despite their close proximity to the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam.

This electrification brings much-needed relief to the fishing and farming communities, which have long lacked reliable energy essential for socio-economic development.

During the 2024 general election period, residents of Awurahae and Sapor staged a “No Light, No Votes” protest to demand electricity. Following this, the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, personally spearheaded efforts to extend power to these communities.

Brief ceremonies were held to mark the official connection to the national grid.

In Sapor, community leaders voiced hope that electricity access will reduce teacher attrition, a problem largely attributed to the lack of basic amenities.

MP Thomas Nyarko Ampem assured residents of the government’s commitment to rural electrification, pledging that by the end of 2028, all communities in the Asuogyaman Constituency without electricity would be connected to the national grid. He also noted that ongoing road projects and plans to establish fish markets in Awurahae and Kudikope will boost the local economy.

On his part, Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, emphasized the government’s goal to increase national electricity coverage from the current 89.3% to at least 90% by the end of 2026. He stressed that expanding access to power is critical for supporting industries and driving economic transformation.

Residents described the electrification as a historic milestone and a major Christmas gift, expressing heartfelt gratitude to government officials for addressing their long-standing needs.
