Ghana has maintained its position as the third most peaceful country in Africa, but its latest global ranking reveals a troubling downward trend.
According to the newly released 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), Ghana dropped from 61st place globally in 2025 to 76th place in 2026. This decline signifies that the country has become overall less peaceful over the past year.
Key Drivers of the Decline
The downward slide is primarily driven by escalating domestic and regional anxieties. Localized chieftaincy disputes and intensifying political tensions ahead of national transitions have severely impacted Ghana’s internal peace metrics.
A Regional Anchor Strained
Despite the global drop, Ghana continues to serve as a critical anchor of democratic stability within a highly volatile West African sub-region. While neighbors grapple with severe security threats, Ghana’s institutional framework remains resilient, though clearly strained by domestic pressures.
Security analysts warn that the 15-place drop should serve as a wake-up call for state authorities to proactively address domestic flashpoints before they escalate further.
