Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has slammed Minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for using what he terms an offensive language at the Chief Justice Nominee Paul Baffoe-Bonnie during Monday’s vetting. Alban Bagbin has consequently rendered an unqualified apology to the heads of the judiciary over the development.
The vetting of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was characterized by accusations and counter accusations from both the Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin which led to a delay in the exercise. The clash happened after the Minority leader described Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as a “disputed nominee”.
The minority subsequently staged a walkout leaving only the majority members of the Appointments Committee to vet the Chief Justice Nominee. Before abandoning proceedings, minority leader and ranking member for the Appointments Committee Alexander Afenyo-Markin announced his side was voting to reject the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice as a result of the active court cases surrounding the removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice.
But speaking on the floor or parliament, speaker Alban Bagbin described the act as shameful and rendered an unqualified apology to the heads of judiciary.
