Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has cited minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin for contempt of Parliament for attending the sitting of ECOWAS Parliament in defiance of a resolution of the House removing his name from Ghana’s delegation.to the sub-regional legislature.
According to the Bawku Central MP his complaint stems from a decision by the Effutu MP to attend a session of ECOWAS Parliament in Nigeria despite a resolution by the House to remove his name of Ghana’s delegation.
The House had by a resolution replaced Afenyo-Markin’s name with that of his deputy Patricia Appiagyei who subsequently rejected her inclusion in a letter to the Speaker. Addressing the matter on the floor of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga disclosed the ECOWAS Parliament refused to swear in members of Ghana’s delegation as a result of the removal of Afenyo-Markin.
According to the Bawku Central MP, it had to take a threat of Ghana’s withdrawal from ECOWAS from him to the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament before the delegation was sworn in. Ayariga consequently prayed that Afenyo-Markin be referred to the privileges committee and sanctions applied if found guilty.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin however refrained from an immediate referral of the Effutu MP to the privileges committee explaining he will need a day to consider the application and return with his verdict tomorrow, Wednesday November 12, 2025.
