GES investigates JoyNews exposé on 2025 BECE malpractice

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has waded into fresh concerns over alleged malpractice in the ongoing 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), following a JoyNews investigation that exposed worrying irregularities in some schools.

In a statement issued on Sunday, September 7, the Service confirmed that it has taken note of the JoyNews report, which highlighted how some teachers and officials were allegedly complicit in helping candidates cheat during the nationwide exams.

GES said it will immediately obtain and review the full documentary and original transcripts from JoyNews before launching a full-scale investigation into the revelations.

The Service stressed that it remains firmly opposed to examination malpractice, describing it as a canker that erodes meritocracy, compromises the quality of Ghana’s human resource, and threatens national development.

With the backing of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and the GES Council, the Service warned that any teaching or non-teaching staff implicated in the scandal will face severe disciplinary action in line with the law and internal regulations.

“Management reiterates its absolute aversion to examination malpractice. Cheating undermines the integrity of our education system, destroys meritocracy, and produces graduates who lack the competencies required for national development,” the statement noted.

GES further assured parents, students, and the general public of its commitment to protecting the credibility of the BECE. It added that it will work closely with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Security, and law enforcement agencies to clamp down on malpractice.

The development comes at a time when public confidence in Ghana’s examination system is once again under scrutiny, with the JoyNews exposé sparking widespread debate on accountability and integrity within the education sector.
