Tamale Central By-election: NDC sets primaries for Sept 6 following Murtala’s demise

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rolled out the timetable for its parliamentary primaries in the Tamale Central Constituency ahead of the September 30 by-election.

In a statement signed by General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the Party announced that nominations will officially open on August 21, 2025, and close two days later on August 23.

Vetting of aspirants is scheduled for August 26, with the final list of approved candidates to be released on August 27. The primaries will then be held on September 6, 2025.

According to the Party, nomination forms will be sold at GH¢5,000, while the filing fee has been pegged at GH¢40,000.

However, female aspirants and persons with disabilities will benefit from a 50 percent reduction in the filing fee.

The NDC stressed that nomination forms can only be accessed and submitted at its Northern Regional Office, and all payments must be made directly into its UMB Bank account at Adabraka, with no cheques or bank drafts accepted.

The by-election follows the tragic death of sitting MP Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who lost his life in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

The Electoral Commission has since fixed September 30, 2025 as the date for the polls.

Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not take part in the by-election, citing respect for the late legislator and the mood of national mourning.
