Ablekuma North Violence: Eight suspects arrested, face court soon – IGP

Eight persons have been arrested by the Police in connection with the violence that marred the Ablekuma North by-election rerun, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has confirmed.

The arrests follow widespread public outcry after reports of brutal assaults on journalists, political representatives, and voters during the July 11 polls in 19 polling stations across the constituency.

Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, Dr. Yohuno disclosed that the suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned before court in the coming days.

“Eight suspects have been arrested as of yesterday. They are being processed, and from the advice I have from the regional commander, by tomorrow or Friday all these suspects will be sent to court,” he stated.

The Ablekuma North by-election was held to resolve voter verification challenges from the December 2024 polls but was overshadowed by chaos and violence.

The IGP reiterated the Police Service’s commitment to accountability, confirming that a police officer captured on video assaulting a journalist had been interdicted and would face internal disciplinary proceedings.

The Police administration has pledged zero tolerance for electoral violence and insists that those behind the Ablekuma North disturbances will face the full rigors of the law.
