Student Clash Disrupts District Schools Athletics Games in Central Region

The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a violent incident that disrupted the District Schools Athletics Games held in Agona Swedru on February 19, 2026.

What began as a routine sporting competition quickly turned chaotic after a confrontation between students from Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).

Eyewitnesses reported that tensions escalated during the games, culminating in a physical clash in which a student from Obrachire was allegedly attacked with sticks and stones by a group of SWESBUS students. Calm was only restored after bystanders intervened and authorities were alerted.

The incident has raised concerns about student conduct and safety at school sporting events, with observers noting that competitions meant to foster camaraderie and sportsmanship are increasingly turning violent.

This clash comes just two weeks after the Eastern Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service banned Koforidua Senior High Technical School, New Juaben Senior High School, and New Nsutam Senior High Technical School from participating in all sporting and educational activities for two years. The suspension followed violent incidents at the 2026 Super Zonal Sports Competition in Koforidua, including the stabbing of a male student and the rape of a female student.

Education officials and law enforcement agencies are increasingly concerned about the rise of violent behaviour in school competitions across the country. While schools are meant to nurture talent and discipline, such incidents suggest a growing challenge in balancing competitive sports with student safety.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that investigations into the Agona Swedru incident are ongoing. Authorities say they are reviewing witness statements and collecting evidence to hold accountable those responsible for the attack.

Parents, teachers, and community leaders have been urged to play a more active role in ensuring students uphold discipline and respect during school sporting events, warning that repeated incidents could lead to more severe sanctions against schools and students alike.

Officials also stressed the importance of conflict resolution and peer mediation in schools, noting that fostering teamwork and fair play is crucial to preventing future violence.

The latest incident underscores a broader concern across the country as authorities and the Ghana Education Service grapple with curbing violence in high schools while promoting sports as a tool for youth development.
