U.S. Embassy Warns Ghanaians Against Visa Overstays Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The United States Embassy in Ghana has cautioned Ghanaians planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup against overstaying their visas, warning that violations of U.S. immigration law could result in serious consequences, including future travel ineligibility.

Speaking at a media engagement in Accra, Chargé d’Affaires Rolf Olson clarified that a U.S. visa allows travellers to board a flight and request entry, but the final decision on length of stay rests with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the port of entry.
“For a B visa, the standard generally is six months, but it is not automatic,” he said.

Mr Olson stressed that travellers must depart the United States before their authorised stay expires.
“People who exceed the terms of their visa are breaking the law, and we take that very seriously,” he noted, warning that overstays could negatively affect future applications.

The Embassy has expanded visa appointment capacity in Accra, deploying additional consular officers and opening hundreds of daily interview slots in the months leading up to the tournament. Mr Olson urged applicants not to delay.
“There’s no reason to wait to apply for a B visa,” he said, noting that while capacity has increased, slots are not unlimited.

He also clarified that there are no special visa rules for World Cup travellers. Holding a match ticket is not required to apply and does not influence visa decisions. On fraud prevention, he warned against “visa fixers,” emphasising that only the official application fee is needed.

The 2026 World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature 48 teams and 104 matches. With Ghana national football team among the qualified nations, thousands of supporters are expected to travel to cheer on the Black Stars.

Mr Olson advised travellers to ensure passports are valid for at least six months at the time of entry, recommending validity through early 2027 to avoid issues. He reassured that lawful visitors carrying valid passports and visas should not encounter difficulties, but reminded everyone to observe U.S. laws at all times.
