At least 11 people have been killed and 12 others injured following a brutal armed attack at a football field in Salamanca, Mexico, authorities have confirmed.
The shooting occurred during a community gathering in Loma de Flores, a neighbourhood in the violence-hit state of Guanajuato. Among the injured were a woman and a child, according to local reports.
Mayor César Prieto strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a “cowardly” act and linking it to escalating criminal activity in the region.
Preliminary investigations suggest the attack may be connected to an ongoing turf war between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, two rival criminal organisations battling for control of territory and illegal trade routes.
Security agencies have launched a full investigation, with joint operations underway to track down and arrest those responsible.
