NADMO blames poor construction materials for Adenta building collapse as one dies, four hospitalised

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has attributed the collapse of a storey building at Adenta New Site to the use of substandard construction materials, as authorities continue investigations into the incident that left one person dead and four others hospitalised.

The collapse occurred on Wednesday evening following heavy rainfall in the area, trapping occupants inside the structure. A pregnant woman died in the tragedy, while her husband and three children sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.

According to NADMO officials, preliminary findings point to structural weaknesses linked to poor-quality building materials. The site has since been declared a restricted security zone to allow for investigations and prevent further risks.

Residents reportedly launched initial rescue efforts before emergency response teams arrived at the scene. Some community members, frustrated by delays, attempted to clear debris themselves, but were later stopped as authorities secured the area.

The Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Dennis Adjanor Nartey, confirmed that the municipal assembly has been directed to begin evacuation of nearby homes as a precautionary measure. Police are also on-site supporting ongoing investigations.

The incident has renewed concerns over construction standards and enforcement of building regulations in rapidly developing communities.
