A loading boy at Ayi Mensah in the Greater Accra Region, Jonathan Quaicoe, has earned praise from the police after returning a bag containing £3,000 and GH¢1,000 which was accidentally left in a commercial vehicle travelling from Accra to Koforidua.
The incident began when a woman boarded a commercial Toyota Hiace at Ghana Flag with the bag containing the money.
After arriving in Koforidua, she realised that the bag was missing and reported the matter to the Koforidua Central Police Station.
The New Juaben South Police Command subsequently deployed an investigation team to Accra to trace the missing bag and identify how it had disappeared.
Police enquiries eventually led investigators to Quaicoe, who had reportedly found the bag while working around Ayi Mensah.
Rather than keeping the money, Quaicoe handed the bag and its contents over to the police, allowing the rightful owner to recover her property.
The police have since commended Quaicoe for his honesty, describing his conduct as an example worthy of emulation.
At a ceremony organised to honour him, the New Juaben South Municipal Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Asante Kusi, urged the public to hand over lost valuables to the police rather than keeping them.
He said acts of honesty and integrity were critical to building public trust and creating a safer society.
As part of the recognition for his conduct, the owner of the money reportedly rewarded Quaicoe, while the police presented him with a brand-new mobile phone.
ASP Asante Kusi urged Ghanaians who find lost property to resist the temptation to keep it and instead assist the police in tracing the rightful owners.
