The Weija Children’s Hospital is set to begin operations after the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) facilitated an agreement between the Ministry of Health and Awerco Construction Limited for the immediate handover of the completed facility.
EOCO said the agreement clears the way for the hospital to be commissioned and opened to provide specialized healthcare services to children and their families.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 16, EOCO said the deal was reached despite outstanding issues surrounding the project, including the contractor’s claim of unpaid sums and concerns raised by the project’s financier about procurement processes and related matters.
According to the Office, the decision was taken “to ensure that the completed facility begins serving its intended purpose, the parties have agreed that the hospital be handed over and operationalised without further delay.”
EOCO said the agreement will enable the government to operationalize the facility while outstanding issues are addressed through the appropriate processes, stressing that investigations remain ongoing.
“The office wishes to assure the public that its investigations…remain ongoing. The agreement to handover and operationalize the hospital does not in any way affect or prejudice the investigations,” EOCO stated.
The Office commended both the Ministry of Health and Awerco Construction Limited for reaching an agreement that prioritizes the welfare of the public.
